Warning to Pay Attention

Hebrews 2:1-4: “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.”

The writer of Hebrews, having just finished telling us how Jesus is higher than the angels, tells us to pay closer attention to the gospel, so that we will not drift away from it. How do I know that he is talking about the gospel? Here is how: “For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?” Jesus’ death and resurrection is our one and only escape from punishment. And also, God used signs and wonders as shadows in the Old Testament to point forward to the cross; such as Abraham and Issac (Genesis 22:1-19), the rock that was struck (Exodus 17:6), and many more.

But what if you don’t believe in Christ, then i’m sorry to say that you are not taking the forgiveness that you can have in Christ. If are are not hiding yourself in Christ, then you are making yourself a target for every kind of pain in the world today. Consider: Psalms 119:114: “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in your word.” But if you run to Christ today, you will be forgiven of all your sin. You will have a shield against the arrows of the evil one, and a protector to help you fight. Cry out to the Lord today.

Our sin must be punished, and it was, but Jesus bore the punishment instead of us, by taking all our sin on the cross. Jesus took the cup of God’s wrath, and drank it dry. There is no longer any wrath on us, and no longer do we bear the punishment for our sin. We, in no way deserved an escape from the punishment of our sin, but God gave it to us, He provided a way of escape in His own Son’s death and resurrection. Thank You Lord!

If you are a fellow believer in the Lord, then I encourage you, to fix your eyes on Jesus’ death and resurrection. And pay attention to it, if you let yourself lose sight of it, you will drift away from it; and like Peter in scripture, you will sink into the traps of the evil one. Dr. Peter Masters, the preacher of the Metropolitan Tabernacle, has been used by God in my life. I encourage you to go to this site: http://www.metropolitantabernacle.org/ and listen to his sermons, he is unlike any preacher I have every heard.

Heavenly Father, I thank You, for giving us an escape from the punishment of sin, which is death, in the death and resurrection of Your Son. And Jesus, I thank You, for being my escape, for taking away my sin, and for drinking the cup of God’s wrath dry. And Holy Spirit, please help us to pay attention to the gospel, help us to never lose sight of the cross; or least, not very long. In Jesus name, amen.
